Bonjour!

Bonjour!

I'm Sam and I am a native New Yorker. I introduce myself this way because my sense of place and of home has come into question lately as I've been waiting to depart for Paris. I think it is pretty interesting to think about how we define ourselves and more than I've ever realized, I define myself in so many ways by my location. I mean, what does it mean to be from New York? I certainly don't know. I guess that it is different things for different people. For me, its understanding the way the city seems sleepy during snow and finding comfort in the ultimate meal of pierogies and ukrainian apple pie at Veselka. It means hating the idea of tourists, but always finding the heart to give them directions instead of ignoring them. All I know is that living in New York can be frustrating, magical, and enlightening and I sort of miss it already.

Moving on, I am studying abroad in Paris this semester because I figured it was time to get out of New York and try something new. I've been studying French for almost a lifetime, so I'm very excited to try my French out on the local population (For the record, the my cab driver said my francais est tres bon). Anywho, I'm really excited to be here living in mon vrai parisien apartement.

Otherwise you all should probably know that I am studying Fashion Public Relations, Gender Politics, and Globalization at Gallatin. And yes, I realize there is a fair bit of conflict between the three. I'm hoping to get a better focus on my concentration here. Other important details about me are: I am a gourmet vegetarian chef, I am freakishly interested in surgery (I haven't ruled med school out), and I have a vast collection of shoes rivaling that of Zsa Zsa Gabor.

I am really interested in finding out about everyone else. If you want any tips on France, cooking, or fashion don't hesitate to ask! I am an open book.

Bon Soiree,

Sam.
