Without a Plan

While reading On the Road I have been continuously amazed by Sal’s absence of aim in his travels. He has a final destination but is willing to take his time getting there and has no real reason for going except to go. At points I find this lack of reason annoying, but it is also rather enticing. I cannot imagine having the guts to just take off across the country. Today it seems like you must have a reason for everything you do and a plan of how you will make it happen.

Its weird to think that the America of On the Road was so different in such tiny ways, one of those being the need for a "plan." It's sad to see that what was obviously such a big part of the American Experience--being a nobody searching for identity On the Road--has faded as a cultural phenomena and been replaced by a tourest industry that can't possibly give any individual person any meaning at all becuase they have to cater to everybody and your experience is not unique nor your own.

Not only must you have a plan, but if you don't it becomes almost dangerous in this day and age. people don't even pickup hitchhikers anymore and those that do are probably not to be trusted. this whole novel displays a type of freedom that is quickly dying in our world.
